ATLA 15 189-250 1988 Fifth Scandinavian Society for Cell The Toxicology Congress on Toxicity Testing in Cellular Systems Introduction AN ordic Symposium on Toxicity Testing by Cellular Methods was arranged in connection with the Fourth Annual meeting of the Scandinavian Society for Cell Toxicology, on 24-26 September 1987 at Hanasaari Cultural Centre, Espoo, Finland. The meeting gathered together some 30 toxicologists from the Nordic countries, and the scientific contributions of the participants included the following topics: applicability of different short-term toxicity assays, mechanisms of toxicity, metabolism studies, and prospects for automation in toxicity testing. The key lecture of the symposium was given by Dr Friedrich Wiebel (Institute of Toxicology, Unit of Cell Toxicology, Munich, FRG) on the topic Expression of xenobiotic metabolising enzymes in cell cultures and their relevance to cytotoxicity testing. In addition to other interesting contributions the programme included a discussion of the MEIC (Multicentre Evaluation Study of In Vitro Cytotoxicity) project. The symposium was sponsored by the Nordic Minister of Councils and the Finnish and Swedish Foundations for Alternatives to Animal Studies.
