Rural Women and Isolation: Pathways to Reconnection

Rural Women and Isolation: Pathways to Reconnection Interviews with 21 women in a rural Colorado county yielded personaldescriptions of isolation and the feelings and strategies that exist inresponse to isolating events and circumstances. Isolation emerged asthree distinct categories of relational disconnection: from specificindividuals; from nonspecific others, such as groups or the largercommunity; or as a combination of both. Factors affecting relationaldisconnection were choice, control, and duration. Women who had thesupport of significant others and those who connected with themselvesthrough self-talk or the achievement of goals were often able to movebeyond the isolating situation and successfully reconnect. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Affilia: Journal of Women and Social Work SAGE
