Abstract

American Educational Research Journal record how many different students are participating. What is the use of improving the creative nature of pupil response if only five out of thirty pupils are doing all the responding? If one's goal is to alter the authoritarian nature of the classroom, there are far more fundamental ways to alter the social structure than changing the nature of the teachers' output. For example, the role of the teacher can be shifted to that of a resource person, or the teachers' evaluative role can be changed. With a more theoretical approach, it is possible to construct simple scoring schemes (used by teachers) to evaluate outcomes of these structural changes. Despite these limitations the book has real utility for a fairly broad audience. This reviewer would recommend it highly to the reader desiring an introduction to the technique of scoring, recording and displaying results of interaction categories. There are technical materials useful for the research worker as well as wise advice on the design of " high density" environments for teacher training and inservice training. Particularly sage is the advice on the professional izing power of teachers working together to solve teaching problems. Finally, the book
