New York: John Wiley and Sons, 1960. pp. vii + 351. $6.75. This first-rate book has two major merits that cannot be rank- ordered since, to the reviewer, they carry equal weight. The more con ventional virtue is the meticulous reporting of a test to measure the important non-intellective variables, test-and general anxiety (plus a third, apparently anxiety-related variable, defensiveness or "lying"). The tests, their development, validity indices or nomothetic network comprise the bulk of the book's content. The second virtue is the meticulous and honest reporting of a theory- based research program with all its strong points, its pitfalls, and its supported and unsupported hypotheses. The authors have presented what approximates a diary of a research program from its inception to the date of birth of the manuscript that reports it. They faithfully detail their efforts to integrate anxiety theory, to develop tests from it, and to form hypotheses into useful research designs and operations. The detail and honesty of this diary are useful and refreshing to research students of any level of sophistication. The authors show
