Co., 1970. 448 + xvi pp. Flanders presents a unique approach to teacher training and re-training. In order to change teacher-dominated, fact-centered classrooms typical of schooling everywhere, he proposes that teachers learn how to score classroom communication between teacher and pupil using either the FIAC system developed by Flanders or one of their own invention. After formulating a goal for modification of teaching strategy and evaluating the attempted change through systematic scoring of their own behavior, teachers will be able to make lasting and desirable alterations in classroom climate. Increased professionalization is an added benefit of the process of teachers' systematic coding of behavior and data analysis. The first ten chapters are a lucid, logical presentation of the nature and technique of coding of classroom communication. The level of presentation is geared to the beginner, whether teacher or researcher. There are also materials for the more sophisticated reader, but these can easily be skipped by the novice. These chapters include exercises in coding verbal exchange, recording and interpreting data, and developing original scoring systems alternative to the FIAC system.
