RAYNER Development in Learning Theory 1955-8 Learning is such a central part of the educational process that the December 1958 issue of the Review of Educational Research should possibly by regarded as basic reading for all subscribers to this journal. Highly qualified reviewers have prepared four chapters on studies in the field of learning during the past three years; however, little appears to have emerged that could be regarded as significant for the classroom teacher. A possible reason for this is that much of the work is being carried on in the animal laboratory. Those who attempted to test their concepts with humans .. were not prepared nor did they often attempt to deal with complex skills, attitudes, and problem solving, or with the processes of group learning". (p. 445) Others attempted to investigate classroom learning. The comment on these studies was that the best of them " could be recommended by informed opinion or a history of successful use ".
