The first statewide meeting in Florida of scientific investigators of seniledementia and Alzheimer's disease was held at Mount Sinai Medical Centerin Miami Beach under the auspices of Governor Bob Graham. A study group of prominent researchers identified opportunities for establishing astatewide network to exchange research efforts and findings among institutions in Florida. The scientific investigators addressed four primary areas: epidemiology, diagnosis and characteristics, treatment, and the establishment of a statewide network. A set of recommendations was made to the Governor and theFlorida Committee on Aging on areas for future state involvement.Major recommendations include the development of a statewide information system containing a patient and resource registry, a scholarship program for certain specialists needed to conduct dementia research, educational programs on dementing illnesses for physicians and the generalpublic, the establishment of a statewide advisory committee, and a determination of the magnitude of the problem in Florida by epidemiologicalstudies.
