Rejection by the Social Order and Delinquent Orientation‡

Rejection by the Social Order and Delinquent Orientation‡ It has been argued that once adolescents are labelled as delinquent, they aresystematically rejected by the social order. Thus they should develop antagonismtowards the criminal justice system, increased tolerance for proscribedactivities, and short-sighted hedonism. These assertions were formulated as nullhypotheses, and a comparison of the attitudes of delinquents andnon-delinquents, through semantic differential technique, resulted in failure toaccept the null hypotheses. Thus, the existence of the predicted attitudes wereverified empirically, but it was pointed out that their origins must beconfirmed through longitudinal research. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Australian & New Zealand Journal of Criminology SAGE

Abstract

It has been argued that once adolescents are labelled as delinquent, they aresystematically rejected by the social order.
