FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF RADIOLOGY AND INTERNAL MEDICINE (DIRECTOR: DOCENT ROMAN MARCINIAK), THE MEDICAL ACADEMY OF WROCLAW, POLAND. RADIOLOGI C STUDIES OF TH E GASTRO- ESOPHAGEA L VESTIBULE IN NORMA L AND PATHOLOGI C STATES by ROMA N MARCINIAK Th e gastro-esophageal vestibule, the so-called sphincter area or pressure barrie r between the stomach and the esophagus, is still the object of much attentio n in the literature. The number of different terms proposed for this par t of the esophagus mirrors the controversial and incomplete state of knowl edge concerning its anatomical structure and physiologic function. The term 'gastro-esophageal vestibule', introduced by LERCHE (1950), ha s bee n accepted by the present author and seems to be the one most commonly used for this par t of th e lower esophagus. Th e radiologie term 'empty segment' also appears justified since in the inspiratory phase the region is devoid of barium . Mano- metri c esophageal pressure studies have revealed that the vestibule may be th e site of elevated pressure ; it is therefore also known as the 'high-pressure zone ' or 'pressure barrier' between the stomach and the esophagus. Th e gastro-esophageal vestibule is a constant
