Psychological Treatment of Sexual Problems AUST & NZ JOURNAL OF CRIMINOLOGY (December 1976) 9 (221·226) R D Tustin· The psychological treatment of sexual problems is attracting a new kind of interest due to proposals to reform the law concerning homosexuality. People are concerned about just what is done in the treatment of sexual offenders, and in the effectiveness of treatment in producing cures. This paper addresses the issue of treatment of sexual problems. There is little discussion of the causes of deviance from heterosexuality. There is little consensus on what causes sexual deviance, and no real prospect of agreement being reached between those who emphasise hereditary and biological factors on the one hand and environmental factors in the early or later stages of development on the other. It is possible to look directly at treatment methods without becoming too enmeshed in the issue of what caused the problem. Traditional Treatments The traditional psychological treatment is psychotherapy. Psychotherapists generally trace the beginning of sexual deviance to early childhood. It is considered that sexual deviance is probably caused by incidents that occurred during childhood, when the person developed either hostility to the mother; or excessive love for the mother; or hostility to the father; or excessive http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Australian & New Zealand Journal of Criminology SAGE
