Professor Ling-xi Qian, a famous engineer, academic and scientist of engineering mechanics, was born in Wuxi , Jiangsu Province on 16 July, 1916. He graduated in 1936 with a bachelor degree majoring in civil engineering from the Institute Technique Franco-Chinois in Shanghai. Due to his excellent academic record, he was granted a Universite Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium. In 1938, he received scholarship from the government and studied in the the degree of Ingenieur de Construction Civile avec grande distinction.
