C hina. H e g raduated f rom t he D epartment o f S tructural Engineering at Tongji U niversity i n 1 955. He b egan h is research on sp atial structures under the su pervision of P rofessor V . Z. Vlasov at the Mo scow In stitute of Bu ilding E ngineering fro m 1 956, a nd o btained h is PhD d egree in 1 960. A fter h e c ame b ack to C hina, P rofessor Dong w orked as an assi stant engineer at Jiangsu Bu ilding D esign In stitute, and th en as an e ngineer an d sen ior engineer at the Ch inese A cademy o f B uilding R esearch. In 1 985, h e jo ined th e D epartment o f Civ il Engineering a t Zhejiang University as a p rofessor in structural engineering. Professor Dong i s currently t he Dean o f the C ollege of Civil Engineering a nd A rchitecture, an d the D irector o f the S patial Structures Research C enter. H e is the E ditor-in- Chief o f t he Jo urnal o f S patial Structures (in Ch inese ), V ice-Director o f Sp atial Structures Committee, China Civ il Engineering S ociety, V ice-Director o f Sp atial Structures Association, China S teel Structures Association, Vice- Director of Building Structures Committee, China Building Metal Structures Association, and member of the China Sports A rchitecture C ommittee. Professor D ong h as ca rried o ut a w ide ra nge o f re search o n sp atial structures including th in-shell structures, space grid st ructures, tower st ructures and lift-slab structures. His contributions t o resea rch, design and teac hing i n s patial structures are en ormous. T he San dwich P late Analogy M ethod fo r sp ace g rid stru ctures proposed b y P rofessor D ong has b een w idely a ccepted in Ch ina a nd h as b een reco mmended b y th e C hinese c ode. P rofessor D ong’s research results have fo und su ccessful applications in m any im portant s patial structures, such a s the Be ijing Air P ollution Monitoring T ower (3 25m in he ight ), a c omposite s pace tru ss for flo ors o f th e X inxiang D epartment Sto re a nd th e roof stru ctures of the C apital Sports H all, Shenzhen In ternational A irport, t he Islam abad G ymnasium, an d th e Malian Parliament Hall. Professor D ong’s active research o n spatial structures over fo ur decades h as led to n umerous tec hnical papers an d several books, i ncluding “ A nalytical Theory an d C alculation Method o f Sp ace G rid Stru ctures” p ublished b y th e Chinese B uilding In dustry P ress, and “ Co mposite S pace Truss a nd O pen-Web S pace Truss” pu blished b y Z hejiang University Pr ess. Professor D ong also played a p ivotal ro le in th e d rafting an d r evision w ork o f sev eral Chinese codes, in cluding “ Sp ecifications for D esign a nd Co nstruction o f Sp ace T russ”, “ S pecifications for L attice Shells” and “ Sp ecifications for R einforced C oncrete L ift-Slab Structures”. Professor D ong’s outstanding co ntributions h ave w on h im 1 8 P rogress in Sc ience a nd T echnology A wards a t both n ational an d p rovincial/ministerial levels.
