Perceptions of the Criminal Justice System in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia 20 (1984) 17 ANZJ Crim PERCEPTIONS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IN KALGOORLIE, WESTERN AUSTRALIA Michael E O'Connort Introduction The data reported in this paper was collected in 1976 as part of a survey of the perception of crime, criminals and criminality among 365 respondents in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia (O'Connor, 1981). The aims of the study were, first, to explore and analyse the social types (Klapp, 1958) of thieves, vandals, prostitutes, violent criminals, swindlers and rapists held by respondents; second, to analyse the crime situation in Kalgoorlie in terms of their perception of the level of crime and their concern and fear about crime; third, to assess their perception of the seriousness of crime and their response (treatment-punishment) to criminals, and, fourth, to analyse their perception of the criminal justice system in Kalgoorlie. The study was framed within an interactionist-social reaction perspective on deviance (Becker, 1973). Through focusing on the community response to crime, criminals, criminality and the criminal justice system, the study sought to emphasize the social reality of social control (O'Connor, 1981) and not simply the social reality of crime (Quinney, 1970).
