This paper is concerned with the development of an optimal design system using FE (Finite Element) package as the analysis engine. There are four main challenges when designing and implementing the system including execution of FE package, extraction of the FE analysis results, modification of the FE model, and linking of function evaluation of an optimal design problem with the FE analysis result. In order to develop a general-purpose and highly flexible optimal design system, modern software technologies including OO (Object-oriented) technology, design patterns and UML (Unified Modeling Language) diagrams are adopted. Various numerical examples demonstrate the proposed system is indeed powerful and can be used to solve complex optimal design problems such as plates, shells and nonlinear problems.
