Mothers Without Custody
Although the majority of women retain custody of their children atthe time of divorce, some women voluntarily relinquish custody.Because of societal expectations ofmothers'roles, noncustodial womenare often stigmatized. This article defines these societal expectations;discusses the environmental, intrapersonal, and interpersonal factorsthat a woman must consider when making custody decisions; and explores the significance of a woman's decision not to retain custody. The role of social workers in establishing self-help groups for thesewomen is outlined.
