Materials Lending Libraries MATERIALS LENDING LIBRARIES: A New Concept Mary Tom Riley Deborrah Smithy-Willis Dale Smith Lending libraries are normally conceptualized as quiet rooms filled with books and silent readers. Today, the quiet book- oriented concept of a library is changing because of the intro- duction of an exciting new concept within Head Start programs: the Materials Lending Library. The Materials Lending Library concept was developed at Texas Tech University by Dr. Mary Tom Riley, Director of the Special Projects Division, and has been fully implemented upon the campus in Lubbock. A Materials Lending Library is designed to provide services to all children and their families, but specifically to the handi- capped child. This community oriented approach could easily be adapted for LD programs at the school district level as well. The library contains not only written materials, but also films, records, cassettes, puppets, filmstrips, toys, books, games, learning kits, resource materials, and exercise apparatus.
