IV S E LEe T I V ERE N A LAN G lOG RAP H V OF MODIFIED TYPE The purpose of modification of selective renal angiography is to prevent admixture of blood during the injection of contrast medium without changing the mean flow through the kidney. This implies that the rate of injection must exceed the mean flow and be equal to or exceed the maxi mum flow during systole. Little is known about pulsating flow in different types of renal arteries. It is known from animal experiments that the shape of the flow curve can be influenced by various factors including pressure gradient, caliber of vessel, elasticity of vascular wall, length of vascular tree and impedance, viscosity of the blood, type of flow (laminar or turbulent), and distance from aortic valves (McDonald 1960). Investi gation of the flow in different arterial segments shows that the fluctua tion between systolic and diastolic flow decreases towards the periphery. In the abdominal aorta a high flow is seen during systole, followed by a short back flow and a low diastolic flow (Fig. 11). In the visceral vessels the systolic peak is much lower and the diastolic flow larger. Cineangio graphy
