International Health Records Newsletter Series 5, No. 11, March,1991 Compiled by Lorraine Ellis Edited by Barbara Anderson President's On 7 April 1991 we celebrate the forty-third anniversary of the World Health Organization. The theme Message for this year's World Health day is "Should Disaster Strike - Be Prepared". In his message to the World, the Director-General of WHO calls for the support of all individuals to be prepared for whatever disaster, natural or man-made, which may occur. Dr Nakajima acknowledges that "it is virtually impossible to prevent most disasters". He believes, however, that we can "forestall or alleviate many of their worst effects by anticipat ing them and by being prepared". For the interest of all members of IFHRO, we have included a copy of the Director-General's report with this newsletter. I would like to draw your attention to his concluding remarks - "International solidarity and cooperation are essential in reducing the adverse effects of disaster". We should all be prepared to respond in whatever way we can to assist the United Nations and WHO in meeting the challenge of disaster reduction.
