I. Revising the Teaching of Grammar in N.S.W. Secondary Schools The Austral ian [ou rnal of Education VOLUME 7 NUMBER 2 JUNE 1963 SYMPOSIUM: COMPETING METHODS AND PHILOSOPHIES IN GRAMMAR [EDITOR'S NOTE.-Stimulated by the need for some reassessment of the concept and place of grammar in secondary education within the context of current changes in N.S.W. secondary education, O. N. Burgess has reviewed and critically examined the potential contributions of traditional and newer structuralist approaches. In response, Anita Pincas bas further considered the adequacy of these alternative approaches in relation to the purposes of teaching grammar. This leads her to reject the eclecticism proposed by Burgess and to assert strongly that it is the structuralist approach to analysis that has more to offer as a basis for the teaching of grammar. The symposium will be continued in a subsequent issue of the Journal with a further paper on analytic methods and a concluding comment by Burgess.] 1. REVISING THE TEACHING OF GRAMMAR IN N.S.W.
