However, many of the circum- stances in Britain also seem to apply to this country. Generally, the attitude of the Australian universities towards Physical Education seems more liberal than in Britain because Physical Education appears as a major study at the However, this is a recent undergraduate level in several of the universities. development and the reasons for the delayed acceptance of Physical Education in Australia are similar to those which hold back the subject in Britain. The question is whether Physical Education can be regarded as worthy of study at the university level. Is there sufficient intellectual challenge in the subject to make it into an academic discipline ? An approach to this question can be made either through a study of the history of Physical Education or through the ideals of those who believe in the contribution that it offers to knowledge in general. If the subject is judged only on the former criterion, then it must be assumed that those who regard Physical Education as physical jerks are somewhat justified.38 In the English context the
