Guest Editorial The First International Conference on Structural Engineering organised jointly b y Tsinghua University and Yunnan Polytechnic University was held on 18-20 October 1999 in K unmin, C hina, at which over 100 papers were presented. The idea of publishing a small se lection of the presented papers in a special issue in A dvances in Structural Engineering was discussed at the Conference between myself and the Editor-in-Chief Professor J.M. K o. As both t he Conference and the Journal share the common mission o f promoting i nternational exchanges in structural engineering, we both en thusiastically supported the idea. As a result, I was kindly i nvited b y Professor J.M. K o to b e the Guest Editor of such a special issue. Selected authors were then invited t o rev ise and extend their papers for publication in t he Journal, with th e result being this S pecial Issue. Most re aders are aware that construction activities are booming i n C hina and the nearby region. This b oom is expected to la st fo r decades to co me, making the region attractive for both s tructural engineering practice and research. Against this b ackground, it i s i mportant that frequent exchanges between researchers and practitioners from the region and those from other parts of the world are maintained. It is hoped that this Special Issue will make a useful contribution to t hese exchanges. I would like to th ank the authors for their careful preparation of the manuscripts, the reviewers for their helpful comments and the Editorial Team at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for their assistance in h andling the review process.
