Experimental Work in the Basic Subjects

Experimental Work in the Basic Subjects The three studies which follow deal with some experimental work in the teaching of arithmetic and reading in two different Australian states. The experiment was conducted over a period of four years in a Sydney school. Abstract

The three studies which follow deal with some experimental work in the teaching of arithmetic and reading in two different Australian states. The first is a report of a valuable piece of work designed to throw light on the problem of determining the appropriate age at which to commence formal work in arithmetic. The experiment was conducted over a period of four years in a Sydney school. Its outcome is such as to suggest that considerable benefit might come from an extension and repetition of the work in a number of other schools to validate its highly suggestive findings. The second and third studies are concerned with the teaching of reading. The first of these describes a piece d enlightened administration on the part of a South Australian inspector, headmaster, and guidance officer, and a year of profitable educational reconnoitring by a group of teachers. The work does not represent a carefully designed and controlled piece of experimentation along the lines of the arithmetic investigation, but, rather, describes a period of exploration, by a group of enthusiastic and encouraged teachers, which is a necessary preliminary to such experimentation.
