URBAN Georgia State University Durin g the past few years the field of American educational history has been dominated by th e work of th e revisionist histo­ rians . Their new interpretations and reinterpretations of the pas t have forced all serious American educational historians to come to terms with revisionism. Further, the controversial na­ tur e and radical content of th e ideas of th e revisionist historians have given their books a popular appeal far wider tha n that of previous works in the field. Inevitably, the work of the re­ visionists is now being criticized and evaluated by non- revisionist historians and by th e revisionists themselves as they review each other's books. This essay is an attempt to evaluate th e work of three of the revisionists, Clarence Karier, Paul Violas, and Joel Spring, throug h a consideration of thei r volume Roots of Crisis.
