Empowerment of Seniors and Paradigm Change

Empowerment of Seniors and Paradigm Change Journal of Applied Gerontology Volume 28 Number 3 June 2009 298-303 © 2009 The Authors Empowerment of Seniors 10.1177/0733464809332367 http://jag.sagepub.com and Paradigm Change A Commentary on Haber’s Empowerment Paradigm Rosalie A. Kane University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Keywords: gerontology; empowerment; paradigm peculating helpfully and fruitfully on the likely impact on aging and Ssociety as the baby boomer cohort passes through old age; David Haber recommends an empowerment paradigm to all gerontological educators and practitioners. Such a focus, he suggests, would foster leadership, cre- ativity, and empowerment among seniors themselves. It would encourage innovative, effective community organizations and pave the way to senior- directed policy making and advocacy instead of professionally dominated policy making and advocacy. Dr. Haber then identifies six movements that he believes are beginning to empower boomers: (1) reengagement rather than retirement, (2) wellness centers rather than senior centers, (3) intentional communities rather than aging in place, (4) supportive homes rather than institutional nursing homes, (5) chronic care management rather than acute care medicine, and (6) intergenerational life review rather than reminiscing. With the possible exception of the advent of intentional communities such as Beacon Hill Village, none of these movements sprung from the organizing efforts of seniors http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Applied Gerontology SAGE
