RADFORD In the interests of both the Australian and overseas reader, this article deals principally with two matters: the sources from which educational research is welling, and the publications and other means by which knowledge of it is channelled to its potential public. From experience it has been found that many matters regarded as common knowledge by those engaged in research are not, in fact, " common knowledge"; and so, in this, the first in a series of articles to be devoted to various aspects of research, the main purpose is to sketch in a framework within which later articles can most profitably be read. There are four main places to which we may at present look for research into education: (i) the universities and university colleges, (ii) the State departments of education and the teachers' colleges, (iii) the Commonwealth Office of Education, and (iv) the Australian Council for Educational Research. Research in the Universities The major part of the research done in Australia since 1950 has been done under the auspices of university departments of education and psychology, by staff and by post-graduate students.
