Editorial Environment and Urbanization AsiA 10(2) 143–145, 2019 © 2019 National institute of Urban Affairs (NiUA) Reprints and permissions: in.sagepub.com/journals-permissions-india DOi: 10.1177/0975425319868084 journals.sagepub.com/home/eua The world’s urban population is expected to nearly double by the middle of the current century making urbanization one of the twenty-first century’s most transformative trends. Coupled with this growth, sustainability challenges in terms of housing, infrastructure, basic services, food security, health, educa- tion, decent jobs and safety will surface more prominently, as cities are amalgamation of population, economic activities, social and cultural interactions. Globally, there have been improvements in the qual- ity of life of millions of urban inhabitants, including slum and informal-settlement dwellers in the recent past. However, the persistence of multiple forms of poverty, growing inequalities and environmental degradation pose a major challenge to sustainable development worldwide, with social and economic exclusions and spatial segregation often posing an irrefutable reality in cities, specially in global south. Most cities of the developing world do not have the capacity to adequately address these and other exist- ing and emerging challenges, although cities can take advantage of the opportunities presented by urban- ization as engines of sustained and inclusive economic growth.
