Editorial Environment and Urbanization AsiA 6(1) vii–ix © 2015 National institute of Urban Affairs (NiUA) sAGE Publications sagepub.in/home.nav DOi: 10.1177/0975425315586902 http://eua.sagepub.com The world is more than half urban and will continue to urbanize with Asia contributing to the future global growth in a significant matter. The demographic weight of Asia accounts for over 60 per cent of world population. The postulates regarding Asia experiencing unprecedented urbanization in recent past or the trend to continue for the next few decades are based on the absolute population figures and the share of the region in global totals that understandably work out to be high. Projections indicate that Asian cities will be the epicentre of future urbanization (World Urbanization Prospects, 2014). In the absence of good governance and proper planning, this would add to the pre-existing challenges of unplanned urbanization. In fact, unplanned growth is ubiquitous in almost all countries in Asia. The consequences of such growth is far reaching resulting in environmental degradation, climate change, inadequate and unequal access to land, finance and basic amenities. Also, the pattern of urbanization is becoming more diverse in Asian countries.
