Thank you to those readers who commented favourably on the new format of the AJE, on Editorial Policy, and the opportunity for dialogue through the State In- stitutes of Educational Research. Offers to review books and manuscripts have been received and are appreciated. Unfortunately it has not been feasible to finance a fourth annual issue of the AJE, or to pursue the notion of an annual thematic issue, possibly with a guest editor. However, I am pleased to advise that for this issue there is a 'theme', partly as a result of earlier planning and partly as a consequence of manuscripts already in train and timed for this issue. The theme is 'Youth in Australia', their academic achievement, their social and cultural background, their career and leisure deci- sions, and important issues relating to quality, equality, and sex bias in education that affect the education of Australian youth. This issue can therefore be con- sidered as a specific contribution by the AJE and ACER to the International Year of Youth 1985. MILLICENT E. POOLE
