Many of us continue to be in a state of shock over the scale, depth and severity of the tragedy; many of us stand confused—do the nations and communities have the capacity and the know how to insulate themselves from the risks that such disasters entail or at least be able to reduce the intensity via appropriate adaptation strategies? What options are open to address such disasters? As a journal devoted to environment and urbanization, we urge our contributors and readers and all those concerned with this vital area to continue to deliberate on and reinforce our search for more informed responses to such disasters. This issue takes Environment and Urbanization Asia into the second year. Like the
