Dorothy Hegarty Award Winners 2010

Dorothy Hegarty Award Winners 2010 The 2010 Dorothy Hegarty Award has been won by Stephanie Hein, Michael Bur, Ulrich F. Schaefer and Claus-Michael Lehr (Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology, Saarland Uni- versity, Saarbrücken, Germany), and their co-authors, Tobias Kolb and Bernhard Muellinger (Activaero GmbH, Gemünden [Wohra], Germany). Their paper, The Pharmaceutical Aerosol Deposition Device On Cell Cultures (PADDOCC) In Vitro System: Design and Experimental Protocol, appeared in ATLA 38(4), pp. 285–295. The PADDOCC system is able to mimic the process of aerosol drug delivery, encom- passing aerosol generation, aerosol deposi- tion onto pulmonary epithelial cells and subsequent drug transport across this bio- Stephanie Hein logical barrier. As it had been restricted to the investigation of dry powder formulations, it is currently being modified for the application of drug solutions or suspensions. Thereby, the implementation of a nebuliser will allow for the eval- uation of new liquid formulations in early stage development. The Dorothy Hegarty Award is presented annually to the author(s) of the paper pub- lished in the previous year’s volume of Claus-Michael Lehr FRAME’s scientific journal, ATLA, which, in the opinion of the members of the Editorial Board, is likely to make the most significant contribution to the reduction, refine- ment and/or replacement of animal experimentation. Each member of the ATLA Editorial Board is entitled to make up to five nominations for the Award, in rank order. As in previ- ous years, a large variety of papers were nominated, reflecting the diversity of the work published in ATLA, and the wide range of interests of the members of the Editorial Board.
