Contributors to This Number J. B. BIGGS has just taken up appointment as Professor of Education at the University of Newcastle. He graduated in arts from the University of Tasmania in 1956, and holds the degree of Ph.D. from the University of London. He was with the National Foundation for Educational Research, London, for several years, lectured in psychology at the University of New England during 1963-1966, then became a Senior Fellow with the Higher Education Research Unit at Monash University. From 1g6g to 1973 he was Associate Professor in Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta. He is the author of several papers and of Mathematrcs and the Condrtrons of Learning and Information and Human Learning. (Educational Administration) in the McCRAE C. GRASSIE is Reader in Education University of Queensland. He is a graduate of St. Andrews University, Scotland, and of the University of Queensland. Prior to taking up his present position, he was Deputy Director of Education in Fife, Scotland. Dr. Grassie was in 1971-72 Secretary of the Australian Association for Research in Education, Membership Secretary of the Australian College of Education (Queensland Chapter) and Editor of the Administrators’ Bulletin. PETER R. HOBSON graduated in arts from Sydney University in 1965 and was awarded the degrees of M.A. (1968) and M.Phil. (1970) from the University of London. After early experience in research and teaching, he was appointed a Lecturer in Education at the University of New England in 1971. He is at present completing a book (in conjunction with Associate Professor James Bowen) called Theories of Education: Studies of Significant Innovation in Western Educational Thought. G. L. JOHNSTON spent some time at the Ministry of Education and the US. Office of Education, as well as with State and local authorities and at universities studying the control of education, while on a visit to the U.K. and the USA. in 1972. He holds the degrees of M.A. (1962, University of Tasmania) and B.Ed. (1962, University of Melbourne), and has been a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education, University of Tasmania, since 1970. After initial teaching experience he was awarded a research fellowship at the University of Tasmania and has held lectureships in education at the University of Tasmania and at Monash University, as well as at Hobart Teachers’ College, He has contributed chapters to Rights and Inequality in Australian Education, edited by P. J. Fensham, and Social Science and the School Curriculum, edited by F. J. Hunt, and is the author of Government in Australia. A. ROSS THOMAS is a Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of New England. Previously he was a teacher in special education and a lecturer in education at the University of Queensland. He is a graduate of Queensland (B.Econ., 1961.; B.Ed., 1964; M.Ed., 1967) and New England (Ph.D., 1973) universities. He IS associate editor of The Journal of Educational Administration and joint editor of Explorations in Educational Administration. C. SELBY SMITH was appointed a Research Fellow with the Education Research Unit, the Research School of Social Sciences, at the Australian National University, in 1969, and in 1972 was promoted to a Fellow. He was an Assistant Professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, Toronto, Canada, during 1968-69. A Rhodes Scholar for Victoria, 1965, he was awarded the degree of D.Phil. (Oxon.) in economics in 1968. He is the author of The Costs of Further Education, joint editor of Australian Higher Education: Problems of a Developing System and Designing a New Education Authority (in press), and co-author of Social Science Perspectives on Australian Education. B. A. SHEEHAN, B.Comm. (Melb., I@z), B.Ed. (Melb., 1g65), M.A. (Ed.), London, 1968, is a Senior Lecturer in Education at La Trobe University. Durin p3-69 he taught in State and independent secondary schools in Australia an8 ngland and became a lecturer in education at La Trobe University in 1970. He is Foundation Chairman, Centre for Comparative and International Studies in Education, La Trobe University. R. T. WHITE was appointed to a lectureship in education at Monash University in 1971, and has been a Senior Lecturer in Education at that university since 1972. He is a science graduate from the University of Melbourne, and also holds the degrees of B.Ed. (Melbourne) and Ph.D. (Monash). He taught in State secondary schools in Victoria for ten years, was a Physics Executive Officer with the Victorian Universities and Schools Examinations Board, and a Research Scholar at Monash University.
