Abstract

COMMENTS Factor Scores Aren't Sacred: Comments on "Abuses of Factor Scores"1 Glass and Maguire wrote an excellent paper on how to compute factor scores. Persons using factor scores should be aware of its content. Nevertheless, people use factor analysis for various purposes, and for some purposes there is no need to use the optimal weights. Probably Glass and Maguire are in the Thurstone tradition and be lieve that factor analysis can be used as a research tool to reveal some kind of innate structure. They carefully plan a factor battery, ensuring tha t there are two or more measures for each hypothesized factor. The factor analysis tests their hypotheses and suggests new hypotheses for them to test by carefully designing new batteries of measures for further factor analyses. These factor scientists compute factor scores accurately when such scores are importan t in their work. Factor scientists are a minority group among those who use factor analysis. Most people who use factor analysis have a hodge-podge of items or measures. Many of these amateur factor analysts don't even make sure that they have two or more measures for each hypothesized factor—usually they don't even hypothesize any factors. Thus, they may
