ATLA 15,140-146,1987 140 Fonds fur versuchstierfreie Forschung (FFVFF) Biberlinstrasse 5, 8032 Zurich, Switzerland The Fonds fur versuchstierfreie Forschung (FFVFF) i.e. the fund for experimental animal-free research, was established in Zurich in 1976, because its founders had come to realise that the term "animal protection" had a negative and emotional image as a result of the activities of extreme antivivisectionists. It was feared that the use of the established slogan "animal protection against vivisection" would have hindered achievement of the primary goal of FFVFF, namely, changing current practice and attitudes in animal experimentation through dialogue with scientists, others involved with animal experimentation laboratories, and legislators. The founders of FFVFF were motivated by ethical, scientific and medical considerations and a desire to clarify human responsibilities toward animals as experimental subjects and to propagate the development of.methods which may ultimately replace animal experiments, and allow more valuable statements. The FFVFF is opposed to the current thoughtless massive use oflaboratory animals. The activities of the FFVFF have already included important catalising efforts. Gerhard Zbinden (Institute of Toxicology, ETH and University of Zurich) investigated the relevance of the LD50 test and stimulated a worldwide discussion on the value or otherwise of this animal test,
