SMITH (1923-1930) A. R. CRANE P. Board's Organization of Secondary Education When Peter Board vacated the position of Director of Education in New South Wales in September, 1922, he left behind him seventeen of the most productive years in the educational history of the State. Not the least of his accomplishments was his fathering of a system of secondary education which was articulated with the primary schools through the Qualifying Certificate Examination and connected with the University by means of the Leaving Certificate Examination. Between these two points there was a variety of schools which served different purposes and therefore offered different courses. There were High Schools and Intermediate High Schools to which entry was gained in order of merit on the results of the Q.C., and there were Superior Public (Day Continuation) Schools (as they were officially but very clumsily named) which were of three types, Junior Technical, Junior Commercial, Domestic Science and from 1921, Rural Schools. Entry to these schools was gained by a pass in the Q.c.
