CAROL ANNE DWYER Educational Testing Service There are few areas of study tha t seem at first glance to be so close to researchers ' own lives as th e study of sex similarities and differences. This leads to the opinion, so often heard, tha t such study is obvious or superfluous, or alternatively , tha t it is trivial. The Psychology of Sex Differences demonstrates abundantly tha t th e study of sex differences is far from trivial and that our accumulated knowledge in this area is seriously incomplete. Our closeness to th e topic may hinder a clear perception of th e bases for our own assumptions. Maccoby and Jacklin's book provides a clear, scholarly, and practical record of th e research in thi s area, and calls into question basic assumptions that have been the foundation of countless psychological and educational studies.
