WITTROC K Professor of Educational Psychology University of California, Los Angeles In this impressive, edited volume, eight authors discuss children's cognitive learning, including strategies for improvin g cognitive learning an d strategies for improving classroom instruction. The authors, all presently or formerly as sociated with the University of Wisconsin, conducted the researc h presented in this volume largely through the programs of the University of Wisconsin Research and Developmen t Center for Cognitive Learning, established in 1964. In the first of thre e parts of th e volume, entitled Learning, Development, an d Cognitive Abilities, Herbert Klausmeier presents his mode l of th e development of children's concepts, which includes four levels, beginning at th e earliest age with the concrete level, followed respectively by th e identity, classificatory, and formal levels. Gisela Labouvie-Vief discusses individual differences in intellec tual abilities, as they relate to children's learning and as they interact with instructional treatments. Elizabeth Ghatala and Joe l Levin write about children's recognition memory and its role in concep t learning
