KAMEN S Northern Illinois University Part of the intellectual excitement aroused by Bowles and Gintis' Schooling in Capitalist America is attributable in my judgmen t to the fact that their account contains institutional level propositions about the origin development, and functions of the educational system. While much of the rest of their work has the same concern with individual status allocation as that represented by th e Sewell, et al., volume , their explicit propositions about the role of education as ideology and as a system of control to maintain capitalist class dominance has led them to raise questions about the genesis and development of mass education that cannot be resolved by individual level analysis.
