Here is a well-written, exceptionally clear and authoritative review of five aspects of the research concerning the effectiveness of schooling which seeks, as H. T. Jame s says in th e Foreword, to undertake a kind of "brokering" between the educational researchers who address one another, and the educational practitioners who need to make policy deci­ sions. The book is successful in this respect, though it is not withou t its flaws.
