Book Review: Urban China in Transition Book Reviews URBAN CHINA IN TRANSITION, by John Logan. Blackwell Publishing Ltd., 2008, 384 pp. ISBN: 978–1-4051–6146-6 (Paperback). Reviewed by Shenjing He Sun Yat-Sen University, China This is a timely publication following John Logan’s earlier collection, The New Chinese City (2002), in the same book series, “Studies in Urban and Social Change”. Not a simple continuation of the previous book, this volume moves forward to examine the multi- dimensional changes and challenges faced by the Chinese city, with much richer theo- retical discussion and debate. Considering China’s complex, unique, and fast-changing urban society, readers would best be served by learning about its intriguing urban changes through multiple perspectives and comparative analyses. This is precisely what this volume offers. The authors seek to interpret urban changes through comparative studies built upon a combination of multiple theories, that is, modernization, world system/dependency, the developmental state, and market transition. Not only offering a comprehensive understanding of the latest changes in urban China, this volume also aims to apprehend general global changes in the twenty-first century by making sense of the most prominent shifts in China.
