Teachers of foreign languages in Australian secondary schools will find some very satisfying reading in this book. Dr. Rivers has taught French in the schools of five different countries, including France and Australia. Her wide experience as a high school teacher is a convincing touchstone applied to audio-lingual method for schools. The book is primarily an examination of audio-lingual method in the light of psychological theories of learning. It offers more than that, however. It also provides a well documented statement of relevant trends in linguistics and in psychology from which the foreign-language teacher may proceed to further reading in these fields. If the reader has no taste for more, at least he can feel that he has been brought face to face with the main issues raised by the audio-lingual method.
