Book Review: The Failure of Imprisonment BOOK REVIEWS 283 when a bad accident occurs many people call for harsh penalties whether deserved or not. Community opinion so far as this offence is concerned js formed on the consequences rather than the manner of driving or the condition of the driver - this anomaly is part of the legislation itself. The circumstances of driving offences and the resolution of the conflicts facing courts are well documented in the book. A non-custodial sentence for culpable driving may well result in a successful appeal by the prosecution. Friends and relatives of the victim express their resentment of a light penalty to members of Parliament. This in turn leads to pressure for appeals against inadequacy. The problem of community interest is again considered by the author in an attempt to classify robberies according to the nature of the victim's business. He has classified robberies by the nature of the premises such as banks, TAB offices, petrol stations, retail shops, chemists" shops, take-away foodstores and so on. There is need to protect the essential parts of our way of life such as the banking system.
