Book Review: Teacher Learning The Australian Journal of Education, Vol. 27, No.1, 1983 Book Reviews The Praaicum in Teacher Education: Research, Practice and Supervision, by C. Turney et aI., Sydney: Sydney University Press, 1982. Teacher Learning, edited by Gwyneth Dow, London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1979 saw the commissioning of the Supervisory Development Project (SOP), centred at the University of Sydney, the aim of which was to 'develop and disseminate training programmes that would prepare supervisors, be they tertiary staff or cooperating teacher, for the work with student teachers in the practicum'. The Practicum in Teacher Education reports on the first three steps undertaken by the SOP team - a review of the international literature concerned with the practicum (I am still old-fashioned enough to call it teaching practice); a detailed survey of policies and procedures relating to the practicum in Australian institutions; the development of conceptual frameworks which were to guide the subsequent production of materials for the training programme. The literature review is very comprehensive and fully documents the well-known gap between the good intentions of all concerned with the practicum and the less-than- ideal actuality.
