Book Review: Social Foundations of Education: A Cross Cultural Approach

Book Review: Social Foundations of Education: A Cross Cultural Approach BOOK REVIEWS climate and pattern of interaction with pupils. Among the rating scales suggested are those developed by B. O. Smith, Perkins, Kounin, Bellack, Combs, and Marie Hughes. The final section of the book is concerned with assessing the informal peer organization in the classroom. From this will come information about the child's interaction with his peers. Included here are sociometric procedures, person perception procedures and observational techniques. Gordon has presented an extremely interesting selection of techniques from the research areas of psychology. It is disappointing therefore that he provides very little evidence or argument indicating precisely how the techniques may be used to facilitate the educative process or even the validity of using many of the techniques for classroom purposes. For the most part Gordon is content to describe each technique in brief detail and to present the administrative instructions and/or items involved. The theoretical rationale underlying each technique is mentioned in only very brief general terms, details of the reliability and validity are rarely considered and very little information is presented as to research findings involving the scales. These are serious omissions and greatly limit the extent to which effective application on the basis of the discussion http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Australian Journal of Education SAGE

Abstract

BOOK REVIEWS climate and pattern of interaction with pupils. These are serious omissions and greatly limit the extent to which effective application on the basis of the discussion
