Women on welfare have long been among the most vilified and stereotyped groups in the public arena—and the voices that are rarely heard. In this book, Seccombe fills this void with the women’s stories, giving them a say on an issue that affects them more than anyone else. On the basis of qualitative interviews with 47 welfare recipi- ents in Florida, the book explores how these women feel about being on welfare, how they got on welfare, what they do to sur- vive, and what they think about the welfare system and welfare reform.
