In Spain a new strand of research is emerging, mainly in the fields of architecture and the history of art, that considers mass tourism as a cultural and aesthetic phe- nomenon. The work of a team of Dutch architects on the Costa Ibérica (Maas et al., 2000), a recent exhibition in Barcelona with the provocative title ‘Tour-isms:The defeat of Dissidence’ (Enguita et al., 2004) and this edited collection focusing on the Canary Islands are some of the best examples.They are fresh and encouraging con- tributions to a field (and a country) in much need of new and radical ideas. ‘Paisajes del Placer, Paisajes de la Crisis’ (landscapes of pleasure, landscapes of crisis) undertakes a cultural and anthropological analysis of tourism and its representations in the Canary Islands.
