London: Routledge, 2000. 216 pp. ISBN 0-415-08632-9. Since the publication in 1989 of Paul Vergo’s The New Museology there has been a growing literature analysing the various ideological, epistemological and govern- mental functions fulfilled by museums. Eilean Hooper-Greenhill’s latest book Museums and the Interpretation of Visual Culture extends these recent critical investiga- tions and addresses three core issues. First, building on earlier discussions of the mod- ern museum’s formative functions, the book asks how the museum idea can respond to challenges posed by postmodernism and post-colonialism. According to Hooper- Greenhill, the museum is rightly seen as a dated institution and needs to re-examine its social role and pedagogic strategies. The museum must move from conceiving itself as a site of authority to a site of mutuality – a movement that will see the mod- ern museum replaced by what Hooper-Greenhill terms the ‘post museum’. Second, the book illustrates the importance of these questions by discussing the multiple processes through which meaning and authority are constructed within the museum. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Tourist Studies: An International Journal SAGE
