Book Review: Management and the Brain MANAGEMENT AND THE BRAIN, by Waino Suojanen and R. Carlton Bessinger. Atlanta: Business Publishing Division, College of Business Ad­ ministration, Georgia State University, 1983. 321 pages. $19.95. As the president and chief operating officer of a small business, I am constantly bombarded with "awesomely rational" advice about managing my business. Whether through the mail or the business best seller list, recurring themes of cost benefit analysis, breakeven, inventory control, cost efficiency, scenario analysis, etc. are packaged and presented for my perusal. I find most of these business-school buzzwords less than useful, and I am convinced that their lack of appeal has much to do with a rather compelling fact: each new disaster for a small business is essentially dif­ ferent from previous disasters. Finally a book that makes sense has arrived on the small business Management and the Brain, by Dr. Waino Suojanen, Professor of scene. Management at Georgia State University, is a collection of articles on the brain and management that aims at identifying different ways of han­ dling information. Of special interest is the material presented that ad­ dresses handling information in the low frequency, high change environ­ ments so characteristic of small businesses today.
