Book Review: Lesbian and Gay Youth: Care and Counseling

Book Review: Lesbian and Gay Youth: Care and Counseling Book Reviews 111 Lawrence, Kansas REFERENCES Reisch, M., & Gambrill, E. (Eds.). (1997). Social work in the 21st century. Thou- sand Oaks, CA: Pine Forge Press. Specht, H., & Courtney, M. (1994). Unfaithful angels: How social work has aban- doned its mission. New York: Free Press. Lesbian and Gay Youth: Care and Counseling. By Caitlin Ryan and Donna Futterman. New York: Columbia University Press, 1998, 175 pp., $45.00 (cloth), $21.00 (paper). One interesting aspect of reviewing this volume was the reaction of others who saw me reading it. As my daughter pointed out as we sat waiting to see the orthodontist, people would look at the book’s title and then look at me, often with an expression of intense curiosity. Perhaps these questioning glances support one of the authors’ basic premises, that stigma and community responses affect the image, behavior, and access to the physical and mental health care of gay and lesbian adolescents. This book aims to provide a comprehensive guide for primary care providers in working with this population and a basic awareness of psychosocial and health issues faced by lesbian and gay youths. It is well written and thoroughly researched, and it includes an ample list http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Affilia: Journal of Women and Social Work SAGE
