Not since the publication of Lisa Gwyther’s seminal work, Care of Alz- heimer’s Patients: A Manual for Nursing Home Staff (1985, American Health Care Association and Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Associa- tion) has the health care profession been given such a valuable tool for pro- viding quality Alzheimer’s care. With a focus on issues related to the early, middle, and late stages, Dr. Tappen provides a much needed perspective on the care of those with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) in this comprehensive hand- book. Too often, concern for the caregiver has obscured understanding of the patient. The author’s humanistic approach to intervention focuses on sup- porting and enhancing the remaining cognitive capacity of persons with the disease.
