Book Review: Innovations in Criminal Justice in Asia and the Pacific

Book Review: Innovations in Criminal Justice in Asia and the Pacific B(J()K HEVIE\VS 1.53 edition and in his preface indicating changes in this edition the author refers to a "sizable portion of commentary on radical or critical criminology"! The area in which this text shows the greatest variation from traditional criminology texts is in the analysis of offenders. As the title indicates, the author sees criminal behaviour as the result of development of a criminal career. He looks at various offender groups, for example the professional "heavy" criminal, the naive cheque forger. The "one-time loser", property offender, the psychopathic assaultist, the aggressive rapist, and for each group looks at the offence itself; the interaction setting; the attitude, self-concept and role career of the offender, his social class, family background, peer group associations and contact with police, courts and institutions. In this way the author is able to draw attention to the differences that exist between groups of offenders and in many cases within groups convicted of the same offence. A chapter new to this edition is one on "Women, crime and the criminal justice system". Here the author draws attention to the "paucity of theoretical or research materials in criminology that attend specifically to female criminality". Abstract

B(J()K HEVIE\VS 1.53 edition and in his preface indicating changes in this edition the author refers to a "sizable portion of commentary on radical or critical criminology"! Included in this chapter
